«b»NOTE:«/b» St. Helen's Church at Bilton Ainsty, North Yorkshire. «u»Pevsner, N. and Radcliffs, E., 1967. The Buildings of England Yorkshire: The West Riding«/u». London England: Penguin, p. 101-2.
Located immediately outside the village (to the north), on slightly rising ground commanding the approach from Yrok to the east, St. Helen's has a site very typical of Vale of York churches. It is largely late 12century in date, only the chapsl north and south of the chancel being later.
The church consisted first of all of a nave and chancel to which aisles were soon added. The west front has a central window iwth a circular window above, both of which are original, and another original window opens to the south aisle. The Norman chancel arch is decorated with zig-zag and the arcade capitals are octagonal, similar to those in nearby Wighill chrch, the capitals on the south side of St. Helen's are decoated with fleur de lys. The south door of the porch is Norman and was probably moved from its original location when the south aisle was built. It has capitals with scallops and waterleaf.

«b»NOTE: GENUKI.com«/b»: St. Helen's Church stands where the York, Wetherby, and Bilton roads meet. It is an ancient edifice of limestone, in the Norman style of architecture, and was erected in 1166 as an appendage to Syningthwaite nunnery. It consists of nave, with north, south, and central aisles. On the south side is a Norman porch, and a bell turret for two bells, but apparently there was never been more than one. The door on the north side of the north aisle, where the excommunicated were to pass out, is built up, but is still visible. In 1870 the church was restored ....at a cost of 1,300 pounds sterling, which was raised by voluntary contributions. ,,,Part of a Runic cross, of great antiquity, found in the west gable end in 1870, now stands on a corbel inside the church. According to Sir Gilbert Scott (wo directed the restoration of the church) it belongs to the time of the Confessor. The font also is the work of a very early period. In 1870 part of a massive oak eagle lectern was unearthed, and is now in use. It is supposed to have been the work of the 13th century. In the south aisle of the chancel is the recumbent figure of an an abbess, dating from the reign of Edward I.
